Backcourt Scenarios(by Ike Relacion):

*When DRIBBLING, both feet and the ball must be in the front court or the player and ball are in the backcourt. When HOLDING the ball, only the position of the feet matters.

*When pivoting while straddling the line, if the foot in the front court is the pivot, the other foot cannot be picked up and put back down in the back court. If the backcourt foot is the pivot, it doesn't matter.

*On throw-ins, A2 can leap from the front court, catch a pass from A1, and land in the backcourt. This is because there is no team control on a throw-in. But he cannot pass the ball to a teammate in the backcourt before touching the floor in the backcourt first.

BACK TO THE COURTS (Mr. Rene R. Bates, MSPT, CSCS)

As the season begins the importance of thinking ahead to prevent injuries is a MUST. There are some simple steps you can take to insure an injury-free season.

The most important step is to have done your homework in the off-season. Have you kept your physical conditioning up? The best way to train is to perform exercises that mimic your officiating activity. Think about the length of the activity, the intensity and type. You do not train a marathon runner by power lifting.

Know your body. Do you know if you have certain areas prone to injury? For instance, do you have appropriated muscular flexibility? Or do you have too much flexibility? Both can lead to injury. Do you have full joint motion in your hips, ankles and back? Do you have appropriate strength and cardiovascular endurance? These are questions you probably never thought of but if you knew the answers you may be able to prevent an injury. See below for flexibility screenings.

How to warm-up is very critical to preventing injury. First, you need to do some light continuous activity like running in place, light jogging, or stationary cycling. Something to get the blood flowing to the muscles. Break into a light sweat and get the heart rate up a little. This usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. Next, you want to perform some general stretches for each muscle group. Stretches should be done in repetitions of ten and held for ten seconds. Stretches should be comfortable and not forced. More is not better. Increasing flexibility is a whole new ball game. We will discuss this topic in future MACBOA Newsletter issues.

If you do suffer from an injury, report it right away to the Coordinator of Officials. Once you strain or sprain tissue, the healing process starts right then. If you do not follow the right precautions you will delay the healing process and may decrease the amount of healing. This will set you up for possible injuries in the future. The goal or treatment is to return you to the previous activity/functioning potential and to initiate preventive and wellness care. Seek professional help from qualified professionals.
