Crew Chiefs: All appointed Crew Chiefs received their ID/Password information via email. If you have any questions, please contact me or Ike Relacion. Remember your ID/Password is case sensitive.

The following members were inadvertently left off the Crew Chief list in the newsletter:

  • Kenny Clark
  • Mike DiRenzo
  • Carolyn Jones
  • Norma Jones

Crew Chiefs: Must contact crewmembers, may also contact college to confirm game time. As a Crew Chief, you must provide a thorough pre-game as well as meaningful feedback during the post-game. Be honest and constructive. Game Reports are due after each game. If you have consecutive games and there are no problem areas to be addressed, then you may complete the on-line game report or mail the game reports after the last game. Game Reports submitted by a Crew Chief must be factual. This includes reporting on school facilities. If you are mailing the game report, your documentation must be legible!

On-line Crew Chief Game Report: The on-line game report is now functional. I want to thank Devon Mays and Frank Stocklin for their valuable input.

Observer’s Game Report: Observers should contact the Supervisor of Officials for their special ID and password in order to access the new online Observer’s Game Report that can be found in the "Crew Chiefs/Observers" special password-protected area of macboa.org. The program script allows the Observer to enter math figures and the program will do the addition for you. Once submitted, the form is electronically send to the Supervisor of Officials with a copy also sent to the observer’s e-mail address.

Staff Directory: MACBOA members should receive their assigned ID/password by Friday, November 16, in order to access the 2001-02 MACBOA Staff Directory on-line through the "Members Only" area. Please review your information and submit any changes to dgray@macboa.org.

ITEMS:

  1. FLAG PATCH: MACBOA policy conforms with the NCAA directive from Ed Bilik, NCAA Secretary/Rules Editor: "If you choose to wear the flag patch it may be appropriately displayed on the left sleeve of the official shirt with the "union blue" to the upper left and two inches above the top of the band. The patch must be sewn on the shirt or attached by Velcro."

  2. ARRIVAL AT GAMES: I have received calls from athletic directors because officials are not arriving on time. Officials must be at the game site, and have notified game administration of their arrival, and in the locker room for their assigned game by: Monday through Friday: 1 hr and 15 minutes or on Saturday and Sunday: 1 hr and 30 minutes before game time. Fines will be imposed.

  3. DO NOT FAX TEST ANSWERS. Using the standard cut-and paste feature: You may "cut" the test from our web site then "paste" it on your e-mail writer and then complete the test and then send it through your email service to dgray@macboa.org or you may mail the completed test by the deadline date to the MACBOA office.

  4. DO NOT FAX PAPERWORK (i.e. routine Game Reports). Only fax game reports that require the Supervisor of Officials to act on the information regarding unusual game situations followed by a personal phone call. Please note that Crew Chiefs can now go on-line to complete the Game Report electronically.

  5. OK TO FAX GAME CONFIRMATION/SCHEDULES

Being a Crew Chief (Ike Relacion)

Crew Chiefs vary in their personalities and approach to the job, but whatever they are like, to be effective they must get the best out of the other crew members. Simply, the Supervisor of Officials selects someone who has similar ideas to him/her, and try to see that officials perform excellent game management during each game assignment. Officials must be groomed to be a Crew Chief over a period of time, so that when the time comes for them to take a leadership role they will be well prepared for the job. Many successful supervisors and Crew Chiefs have worked closely together to achieve success. The Supervisor must make the Crew Chief’s responsibility clear at the outset to prevent any misunderstandings. Some Crew Chiefs can motivate their crews verbally while others work by quiet example. The Supervisor must make time to mentor the aspiring ‘crew chief’ for the job, for a lot of potential troubles can be spotted before they occur by having experience of similar situations. The supervisor can mentor the Crew Chief by discussion and by giving experience in handling players, coaches, and unusual play scenarios.

Leadership ability

The Crew Chief must want to take responsibility and want to lead others by example. The Crew Chief must be a determined official and have a strong motivation to perform consistently well, be practical in the application of rules and common sense, and be an effective administrator of the game.

Mature attitude

The Crew Chief must gain the other crewmember’s respect by his/her personality and game management skills. The Crew Chief is a relationship manager, pure and simple. To do this, he/she must be consistent in temperament and assess each situation coolly, and he/she must have the necessary concentration and resources to guide the game when the going gets tough. Good communication between the Crew Chief and the crewmembers is a must.

Inspirational qualities

The Crew Chief by approach and example, must be able to inspire a crew often - during scrimmages as well as regular and post-season assignments. The crew chief must be able to inspire the nervous crewmember and subdue the over-confident one.

Answers to Test #1

  1. When are officials permitted to go to the courtside monitor?
Rule 2-5: Use of the monitor is permissible this year to determine if a try for goal is a two- or three-point shot attempt regardless of whether the try is successful or not.

  2. What is the ruling if during warm-ups, a player dunks the ball?
Rule 10-3, 10-4: No more 1 free throw technical foul administration. All such fouls both direct and indirect will be penalized with two (2) free throws awarded to the offended team then the ball will be returned to play at the POI. Dunking during warm-ups is not unsporting. Shoot 2 free throws and start the game with a center circle jump ball.

  3. What is the ruling when a coach calls an excessive TO?
Rule 10-3: Men’s Rule: Team charged with an excessive TO. The coach retains possession of the ball after the other team’s 2 free-throw attempts. Women’s Rule: Team that calls the excessive TO loses possession after 2-shot free throw administration.

  4. Describe the process after a coach is assessed a technical for histrionics on a previous play?
Rule 10-3: The other team is awarded 2 free throws. The technical counts toward the team foul total and is a direct technical for purposes of disqualification.

  5. Can you have BI and goaltending on a throw-in?
Rule 4-4: BI can occur on a throw-in, but Goaltending may not.

  6. When does your jurisdiction as an official begin?
Rule 2-4: Men’s Rule: 30 minutes, and Women’s Rule: 15 minutes before scheduled starting time of game through the referee’s approval of the final score.
