Donnee L. Gray

Dear MACBOA Officials and Observers:

This letter comes to you on behalf of Willie, Vedia, Tommie, Ike and me. We hope your summer was super and you are in shape, mentally sharp, hitting the rulebook and casebook, and ready for the upcoming 2002-2003 season!

As we prepare for the 2002-2003 basketball season, you should know that MACBOA has just completed a banner year during the 2001-2002 college basketball season. Over 60% of the MACBOA staff received assignments to officiate in the D-I, D-II, D-III post-season tournaments. MACBOA Officials also received assignments in the Maryland State Men’s and Women's Maryland State Tournament, Men’s and Women’s Regional Tournament, and the National Junior College Men’s Championships. Our rapport with the institutions that we serve has never been better. We work with some of the most talented student-athletes, coaches and administrators in the country.

One goal that MACBOA seeks to foster is a true spirit of sportsmanship and mutual understanding on the part of those associated with collegiate athletics - coaches, administrators, student-athletes, and officials alike - since there is a common responsibility of conducting athletic contests on a high plane. It is everyone’s responsibility and anything less is unacceptable.

Officials:

It was an honor and pleasure to have worked with you during the 2001-02 basketball season. Based on your performance and contributions, I would like to once again offer a contract to you for the upcoming 2002-2003 basketball season. If this is your first year with the Mid-Atlantic College Basketball Officials Association (MACBOA), on behalf of the MACBOA family, we welcome you.

There are a few things that we need to keep in mind to help make everything run smoothly.

  1. Read your CONTRACT completely. Contracts will be mailed shortly.
  2. Our MACBOA Dress Code is for SUCCESS. Your attire when you arrive at the game site as well as your attire during and after the game should project professionalism.
  3. Report to the game site 1.5 hours prior to the scheduled game starting time. Tardiness is NOT acceptable. If you report to a game assignment late more that twice, your association with MACBOA will be forfeited.
  4. The technical foul should never be used as a whip or shield. If assessed, it should make the situation and game better.
  5. Always treat coaches, players, and fans with total respect. If they are to be removed, then do it professionally.

If you have any questions concerning any of the above items, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Observers:

Like officials, you played a major role in our success this past season. Therefore, once again, I am asking for your services and input during the 2002-2003 basketball season.

Officials and Observers:

Paperwork: Contracts are being sent via the U.S. postal service. You can go to our MACBOA web site (www.macboa.org) and click on "FORMS" to download the documents to be mailed to the office no later than August 31, 2002. The following items are required:

    PDF | Text
  • Physical Certification Form
    PDF | Text

Your completed and signed contract along with a passport sized head shot photograph (if not already on the web site Staff Directory), proof of Liability Insurance (not health insurance, but basketball officiating liability insurance and application fee of $75.00 should be sent to the MACBOA office (Post Office Box 98, Bryans Road, MD 20616) no later than August 31, 2002.

Please DO NOT FAX any of your paperwork to the MACBOA office.

Regarding Corporate Sponsors: One way that allows us to raise officials’ fees is through sponsorship. I have sought out businesses that each MACBOA member, from time to time, can use. We are happy to announce that we have added a few new sponsors this year. I encourage all MACBOA members to utilize our sponsors and products. If we do not patronize our sponsors, WE LOOSE MONEY.

MACBOA Clinic: I have saved this for last. The mandatory MACBOA Clinic will be held at Prince George’s Community College Gymnasium on Sunday, September 29, 2002. The meeting will begin at 7:00a.m. SHARP! Late arrivals and unauthorized early departures will be fined.

Golf: Anyone interested in playing golf? We will be playing golf on Saturday, September 28th with some of our sponsors. If you would like to play, please notify me no later than September 15th,Thank you again for your assistance in these matters. I look forward to a successful 2002-2003 basketball season.

Reward, challenge, appreciation, stimulation, writing, reading...rarely thanked or noticed.

These are some of the attributes of the well hidden job of MACBOA Newsletter Volunteer. Are you interested in working behind the scenes (screens?) to help get information to members? MACBOA is looking to grow our ranks by a couple of folks and thus, we're soliciting volunteers.

What do you do? Read postings. Write articles, membership news, coordinate interviews, cultivate sponsor relations, etc. Write e-mail back and forth amongst us to establish communication, and guidance to keep this list as valuable as possible for our membership. Although we're virtual, our presence is sensed, we hope...and appreciated, although rarely acclaimed.

We haven't a job description, nor do we know what knowledge, skills, and abilities are required, but some that will come in handy are:

  • having the ability to write
  • being thick skinned, not thick headed
  • being able to express your opinions, while being open minded
  • having at least a free hour or two a week caring for the membership

Please respond directly by e-mail to: irelacion@aol.com
