Remarks from the Supervisor of Officials: Donnee L. Gray

Donnee L. Gray

I hope you are having a fun and relaxing summer and getting some much deserved vacation time squeezed in somewhere! As we prepare for the upcoming 2004-05 season, we hope you are getting in physical shape, mentally sharp, hitting the rulebook and casebook.

MACBOA has just completed a banner year during the 2003-2004 college basketball season. Over 50% of the MACBOA staff received assignments to officiate in the D-I, D-II, D-III post-season tournaments. MACBOA Officials also received assignments in the Region XX Men's and Women's Maryland State Tournament, Men's and Women's Regional Tournament, and the National Junior College Men's Championships (Delhi, NY and Kansas City, MO). Our rapport with the institutions that we serve has never been better. We work with some of the most talented student-athletes, coaches and administrators in the country.

One goal that MACBOA seeks to foster is a true spirit of sportsmanship and mutual understanding on the part of those associated with collegiate athletics (i.e. coaches, administrators, student-athletes, and officials). Since there is a common responsibility of conducting athletic contests on a high plane, it is everyone's responsibility and anything less is unacceptable.

Officials:
Congratulations to all officials, observers and administrative staff on the high quality professional service provided. We hope to bring continuity of officiating to the entire conference as we service all Maryland community colleges and Columbia Union College. The selection solidifies MACBOA's position as a provider of high quality professional services in the sports officiating market.

Preparing for the Season:
There are a few things that we need to keep in mind to help make everything run smoothly.

Read your CONTRACT completely. Contracts will be avaialble on the MACBOA web site (www.macboa.org) shortly. All assignments will be done via Assignbyweb. If your evaluation indicated that you will be retained for the 2004-05 season, please go to www.assignbyweb.com/macboa -- click on "User Registration" and enter all requested information. Please do this no later than September 15, 2004. If you have any questions, please call the MACBOA office (301-283-6807) or email us at dgray@macboa.org . DO NOT CALL ASSIGNBYWEB.

Observers:
Like officials, you played a major role in our success this past season. Therefore, once again, I am asking for your services and input during the 2004-2005 basketball season. Please go to www.assignbyweb.com/macboa -- click on "User Registration" and enter all requested information. Please do this no later than September 15, 2004. If you have any questions, please call the MACBOA office (301-283-6807) or email us at dgray@macboa.org. DO NOT CALL ASSIGNBYWEB.

Officials and Observers:

  • Your completed and signed contract along with a passport sized head shot photograph (if not already on the MACBOA web site's Staff Directory unless you want to change it.) Please clearly print your name on the back of the picture.

MAIL ALL OF THE ABOVE TO: MACBOA OFFICE, Post Office Box 98, Bryans Road, MD 20616 no later than September 15, 2004.

Please DO NOT FAX any of your paperwork to the MACBOA office. If you fax your materials to the office, a $25 fine will automatically be deducted from your game fees. Last year it cost this office over $400 in expenses for materials that were sent via fax.

Regarding Corporate Sponsors

One way that allows us to raise officials' fees is through sponsorship. I have sought out businesses that each MACBOA member, from time to time, can use. We are trying to solicit new sponsors this year. I encourage all MACBOA members to utilize our sponsors and products. If we do not patronize our sponsors, WE LOOSE MONEY.

Reward, challenge, appreciation, stimulation, writing, reading...rarely thanked or noticed.

These are some of the attributes of the well hidden job of MACBOA Newsletter Volunteer. Are you interested in working behind the scenes (screens?) to help get information to members? MACBOA is looking to grow our ranks by a couple of folks and thus, we're soliciting volunteers.

What do you do? Read postings. Write articles, membership news, coordinate interviews, cultivate sponsor relations, etc. Write e-mail back and forth amongst us to establish communication, and guidance to keep this list as valuable as possible for our membership. Although we're virtual, our presence is sensed, we hope...and appreciated, although rarely acclaimed.

We haven't a job description, nor do we know what knowledge, skills, and abilities are required, but some that will come in handy are:

  • having the ability to write
  • being thick skinned, not thick headed
  • being able to express your opinions, while being open minded
  • having at least a free hour or two a week caring for the membership

Please respond directly by e-mail to: irelacion@aol.com
