Remarks from the Supervisor of Officials: Donnee L. Gray

Donnee L. Gray

We hope you had a relaxing Memorial Day holiday!

Everyone should have received their pay as of this newsletter.  If there are any problems/concerns regarding your money please don' t hesitate to call.

We are no longer using AssignByWeb because of numerous inconsistencies (errors in reports, assignment errors, and more).

Per your contract, please remember that you must visit the MACBOA website during the off season for important information/announcements.

If you know of any local referee schools in your area please let me know. Often times I hear about the school(s) after they are over with.  I am looking for good officials and people of good character.

Also we are looking for observers as well (Baltimore, Delaware, Rockville, areas).

We will post the new assigning website as soon as we finish comparing them.

A word to the wise: 1) attending a referee school can only help you and your career, if you go in with an open mind, willing to learn, take and use criticism as a tool.  Don't attend any referee school knowing everything, and with sole purpose is to get into that conference (not interested learning).

A word to the wise: 2) This year is the year I look at 20 to 25% of a staff turn over.  Excuses have run out for some!!   I owe officials who show they want to get better, become leaders, and those who are looking for a spot on the roster.

Why a word to the wise (1&2): Per our NEW CONTRACT with the Conference, they are expecting more and so do I.

Congrats to all who worked post season at all levels!!!   Please e-mail me the following: a) your name b) conference tournament worked c) NCAA games worked, d) High school Tournament worked.  No term papers please, just the information requested.

Have a super and safe summer with your family.  I look forward to seeing everyone in September!!!

First Book.4th Annual First Book "Golf for Literacy" Tournament

Dear MACBOA staff,

Over the past few years, many of you have supported  the First Book "Golf for Literacy" tournament as a player and/or as a sponsor.   We are pleased that we are able to host our 4th Annual Tournament this year on Monday, June 26, 2006 and hope that many of you will be available to join us.

For those of you not familiar with this tournament, let me share a little history.  First Book is a national nonprofit children’s literacy program.  We provide new books to children from low-income families in communities nationwide.  First Book works with existing community literacy programs to provide books to the children who are most in need.  Over the past tree years, First Book has distributed over 30 million new books.  To learn more about the organization, please visit the national web site at www.firstbook.org.

The Golf for Literacy Tournament is sponsored by the First Book Charles County Advisory Board.  All funds raised are used to purchase books for children locally.  In the past three years, we have distributed over 8,000 new books as a result of the support received from individuals like all of you.

Attached you will find the Registration flyer and a Sponsor Option form.  We hope that schedules permitting, many of you will join us for a fun day of golf.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.

Reward, challenge, appreciation, stimulation, writing, reading...rarely thanked or noticed.

These are some of the attributes of the well hidden job of MACBOA Newsletter Volunteer. Are you interested in working behind the scenes (screens?) to help get information to members? MACBOA is looking to grow our ranks by a couple of folks and thus, we're soliciting volunteers.

What do you do? Read postings. Write articles, membership news, coordinate interviews, cultivate sponsor relations, etc. Write e-mail back and forth amongst us to establish communication, and guidance to keep this list as valuable as possible for our membership. Although we're virtual, our presence is sensed, we hope...and appreciated, although rarely acclaimed.

We haven't a job description, nor do we know what knowledge, skills, and abilities are required, but some that will come in handy are:

  • having the ability to write
  • being thick skinned, not thick headed
  • being able to express your opinions, while being open minded
  • having at least a free hour or two a week caring for the membership

Please respond directly by e-mail to: irelacion@aol.com
